Travis Head says Australia will look to bat for as long as possible on day two of the fifth Test and anything over 300 runs will be a great platform to build from.

Head scored 101 runs on his return to the side at Hobart and is priced at 16/1 to be named Australia's player of the series.

Great innings

Head came to the crease with Australia in dire trouble at 3-12 from the opening 10 overs but his aggressive style of play helped to swing the game back in the baggy greens' favour.

First of all he combined well with Marnus Labuschagne before putting on more runs with Cameron Green as the Aussies finished 6-241 at stumps.

Starc not ready to rest

Head was very disappointed with the way he got out when chipping a catch straight to Ollie Robinson off the bowling of Mark Wood, but he can still be happy with the performance he put in.

Australia now have a great platform to build on and Head says anything above 300 runs will give the bowlers plenty to work with as they look to win the series 4-0.

"Anything over 300 is going to be a great start," Head told reporters. "We’ve got a high-quality bowling attack. Batting as long as we possibly can tomorrow is going to be key."

England praise

England will be disappointed and will feel they let Australia off the hook as Wood and Chris Woakes could not back up the fine early bowling from Robinson and Stuart Broad.

However they also had praise for the performance of Head who capitalised on any stray deliveries.

"It was a really smart innings that Travis played," England bowling coach Jon Lewis said. "Counter-attacking and hitting our guys off lengths, we were a bit slow to adapt."
