Klopp wary of Atleti threats

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists he could not have more respect for Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid side as the clubs prepare to reconvene in the Champions League this week.

The Reds are 5/4 to beat Atletico, who are 11/5 to win with the draw 12/5 on Tuesday.

Reds back in Europe

Klopp's men resume their Champions League campaign this week following a 3-2 win over Milan and 5-1 thrashing of Porto in their opening group fixtures.

But they face their toughest challenge yet on Tuesday when they travel to the Wanda Metropolitano to face the reigning La Liga champions.

Atletico have taken four points from their opening two group matches but they will have fond memories of their last European meeting with Liverpool back in March 2020.

On that occasion Atletico headed to Anfield for the second leg of a Champions League last 16 encounter, having won the home fixture 1-0.

Liverpool took the game to extra time, leading 2-1 after 90 minutes, but late goals from Marcos Llorente and Alvaro Morata won the tie for the Spaniards and left Klopp to lament Atleti's approach to the game.

Simeone impresses Klopp

But as the teams prepare to meet again, Klopp has conceded that although he does not like the way Atletico play, he respects them and experienced coach Simeone.

Regarding his opposing number this week, Klopp said: "Diego Simeone is doing everything right - he is the Spanish champion and he has been at Atletico for a long time.

"He keeps them on their their toes and they fight for all their lives - I couldn't respect it more.

"Do I like it? Not too much. But that's because I like a different style of football - it just has to be successful and that is what Atletico is for sure."
